The announcement and award ceremony of the 2016 Academia Sinica Research Award for Junior Research Investigators was held in the B1C Auditorium, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Academia Sinica on June 7, 2016. This year, there were a total of 17 awardees, six from the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, six from the Division of Life Sciences, and five from the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. The ceremony was hosted by Vice President Andrew H.-J. Wang and winners briefly presented their winning publications.
The awards are given in three main categories and this year a total of 121 applications were received-58 from the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, 26 from the Division of Life Sciences, 37 from the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. All applications underwent a stringent review procedure including pre-screening, initial review, second round review, and a final review.
In order to meet societal needs and promote the development of the academy, Academia Sinica encourages multidisciplinary research. This year ten applicants submitted multidisciplinary research and three of them are awarded.
The awardees each received a certificate and a cash prize of NT$200,000. In addition, each also received NT$300,000 for research expenditures to be used within two years of receipt of the award.
Since 1996, Academia Sinica has been honoring junior scholars who have published research papers or books that make a lasting impact in their research fields with the Academia Sinica Research Awards for Junior Investigators in Taiwan. Many of the young academics who previously received the award have subsequently become outstanding scholars in Taiwan and abroad.
