There are very few awards available on a national level in Taiwan that recognize scholars early in their careers. Since 1996, Academia Sinica has been honoring junior scholars who have published research papers that make a lasting impact in their research fields with the Academia Sinica Research Awards for Junior Investigators in Taiwan. Many of the young academics who previously received the award have subsequently become outstanding scholars in Taiwan. On June 2, an award ceremony was hosted by President Chi-Huey Wong for this year's winners. Vice Presidents Chien-Jen Chen, Fan-Sen Wang and Yu Wang also attended the ceremony. During the ceremony, winners briefly presented their winning publications.
The 16 recipients each received a certificate and a cash prize of NT$200,000. In addition, they also received NT$300,000 for research expenditures to be used within two years following the receipt of the award.
The awards are given in three main categories and this year a total of 121 applications were received－53 from the Mathematics and Physical Sciences Division, 29 from the Life Sciences Division, 39 from the Humanities and Social Sciences Division. All submissions underwent a stringent review procedure including pre-screening, initial review, 2nd stage review, and a final review.
